When to Call for Help: Recognizing a Second Heart Attack

Having survived a heart attack is already a big challenge, and the worry of a second one can be frightening. Unfortunately, many people experience a second heart attack. In India, many heart attack survivors face the risk of another one in the coming years.

Signs of a Possible Second Heart Attack:

  • Chest Pressure or Pain: This may feel like someone is pressing or squeezing your chest tightly. It could also feel like a heavy weight on your chest.
  • Pain in Upper Body: The pain may spread to your arms, back, neck, jaw, or stomach. Sometimes, the pain can feel like indigestion.
  • Shortness of Breath: You may feel breathless even when sitting or doing little activity, or without chest pain.
  • Other Symptoms: You might feel very tired, dizzy, cold sweats, or feel sick to your stomach. Women may experience unusual tiredness or a feeling like they can’t move, which could be signs of a heart problem.

Steps to Take for Immediate Medical Attention:

  • Call Emergency Services: If you feel any of these symptoms, especially if they are similar to the first heart attack, don’t wait – call for help right away. The quicker you act, the better your chances.
  • Stay Calm: Sit down and try to stay calm while waiting for medical help. Don’t try to walk around or exert yourself.
  • Tell Family and Friends: If you’re with someone who has had a heart attack before and shows these signs, encourage them to seek help immediately.

Taking care of your heart is important. Follow your doctor’s advice, take your prescribed medicines, and get regular check-ups. Keeping an eye on your health and acting quickly can help prevent a second heart attack and improve your recovery.
