Fatty liver disease happens when too much fat builds up in the liver. It has quietly become very common in India, with nearly 1 in 3 Indians now affected. \u00b9 The exact cause of the disease is not known, but certain health conditions like obesity and high blood sugar are closely linked to it.2<\/sup> Children and young adults can develop fatty liver disease, but it is most common in middle-aged people who are overweight\u2014especially those with extra fat around the waist\u2014and who have high blood sugar, high blood fat levels or high blood pressure.\u00b2 Unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activity further increase the risk of this condition.\u00b9<\/p>\r\n

The disease is sometimes called a silent liver disease. This is because it can happen without showing any signs. Most people with the disease live with fat in their liver, without having liver damage.2<\/sup> some people may go on to develop metabolic dysfunction associated steatohepatitis (MASH). They might notice symptoms such as pain in the upper right belly, severe tiredness (fatigue), unexplained weight loss, muscle loss associated steatohepatitis (MASH). In case of advanced stage signs such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, spider-like blood vessels on the skin, swelling from extra fluid may be seen. \u00b2 If these symptoms appear, it usually means the liver disease has already reached a serious stage. This can limit treatment options and may increase the risk of other health problems, such as heart disease and certain cancers.3<\/sup><\/p>\r\n

Scarring of the liver, called fibrosis (accumulation of fibrous tissue), is an important sign that the disease could become serious. It increases the risk of severe liver problems, including cirrhosis (advanced liver damage), liver cancer and other health issues outside the liver. Recent studies in India suggest that 10\u201315% of people with fatty liver may already have advanced scarring, but most do not know it until the liver starts to fail.3<\/sup><\/p>\r\n

Because the disease often has no early symptoms, early diagnosis is important. Finding fatty liver disease early allows steps to be taken to prevent or reduce liver scarring, protecting long-term health.\u00b3<\/p>\r\n
